At approximately 4 pm local time on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, a massive fire was reported at K-Solv, a chemical distribution and maritime services facility in Channelview, Texas that prompted a shelter-in-place order from health and safety officials who admitted they were unsure of the source of the fire or the chemicals that were involved.
The chemical facility is known to store and distribute potentially toxic chemicals, including acetone, ethanol, ethylene dichloride, hydrochloric acid, and other acids.
The extraordinary blaze at the industrial facility sent a huge plume of thick, black smoke over eastern Harris County, which continued for hours, endangering more than just the plant’s employees, but Channelview’s over 43,000 residents, first responders, and commuters in the area.
Those who were exposed to the volatile black plumes of smoke could initially experience serious respiratory problems, but the ongoing injuries that may result from this chemical fire may be far reaching — affecting the air, water, and soil quality in Channelview, Houston, and other nearby cities going forward.
